About
A quiet place to
study AI engineering.
Freitz Labs is a personal workbench kept public — one developer learning to build with AI on open-source and free tools, and a community of builders learning alongside.
Mission
Make modern AI engineering learnable for anyone with a laptop and the will to study.
Learning AI today usually starts with a credit card. Tutorials assume an API budget. Courses gate lessons behind paywalls. Newcomers are told the door is open, then asked to pay for the key.
We think that’s backwards. The interesting work in AI — prompting, retrieval, agents, evaluation, shipping — can be practiced end-to-end using tools that cost nothing. Google AI Studio’s Gemini, free tiers of modern vector stores, open models you can run locally. The material is there. What’s missing is a careful path through it.
Freitz Labs is that path — a personal workbench kept public, so other builders can follow along. Lessons are written to be read slowly, not scrolled. Projects are small enough to finish, real enough to keep. The goal is not to produce graduates. The goal is to produce builders.
Who builds this
Built by a developer who got tired of waiting for permission.
Freitz Labs started as a set of personal notes — lessons written for a future version of the author who wanted to learn AI but kept bouncing off the cost of entry.
The notes became a lab. The lab grew into a community. It is still written by one person, in the open, for anyone who wants to build alongside.
What we don’t do
The shape of this place is defined as much by what it refuses.
- No paywalls
- Every lesson, exercise, and project is free. If a track depends on a paid API, it doesn't belong here.
- No affiliate funnels
- We don't take a cut from the tools we teach. Recommendations are made on merit, not margin.
- No hype cycles
- We don't chase the model of the week. The curriculum favors ideas that will still matter in a year.
- No gatekeeping
- No prerequisites beyond a working comfort with code. Curiosity is the admission requirement.
If you have a laptop and an afternoon, you have everything you need.
